This is where we put the interesting posts that don’t fit under General Comments. We consider a comment to be something that refers to the Malleus Maleficarum itself, or its place in history, or the specifics of this web site. An essay or a rant is something that meanders a bit, offering up, for example, a treatise on spirituality or ruminations on the Catholic church in general. We don’t want to silence the voices of those who feel compelled to make a statement, but we do need to put it in proper context. So those long essays and ruminations that won’t fit under General Comments will most likely be moved here.

If you make an inappropriate comment on an individual page, we’ll most likely move it here instead of approving it where you originally posted it.

Our idea of an inappropriate comment would be posting a general comment about the work as a whole on an individual chapter. We also frown on treatises about Christianity, Paganism, or any topic that’s largely unrelated to the post you’re commenting upon.

As for limitations of comments, we do moderate comments. We have no choice. We will approve most comments if they’re made in the right place, but we will not approve comments that are full of hate, profanity or are otherwise generally offensive.

Other than that, have at it. Thanks for your comments.

We’ve made this web page available to help users of the web site find a personal printed copy of the Malleus Maleficarum. We don’t sell these books ourselves, but rather have made them available through an association with Amazon.Com. Malleus Maleficarum Online does receive a small quarterly commission for the books which our users purchase through our links. This money is only used to help defray the costs of our Internet server; i.e. the financial cost of keeping the Malleus Maleficarum available online. No one involved with Malleus Maleficarum Online receives any of this money. All work done on behalf of Malleus Maleficarum Online was and is done on a volunteer basis with no compensation.

Listed below are the editions of the Malleus Maleficarum which are currently in print, as well as certain other references that pertain to this subject or subjects addressed within the Malleus itself. We certainly do not mean to imply that those who wish to be more familiar with this subject should purchase every book on this list. We’ve simply attempted to address the many different perspectives from which various people approach the Malleus Maleficarum, and have attempted to list other works which may also be of interest.

In-Print Editions of The Malleus

translation by Montague Summers
Dover Publications
(Paperback, June 1, 1971)

This is the edition which was transcribed and posted on the Internet by the Malleus Maleficarum Online project. At the time of our transcription, to our knowledge this was the only edition of the Malleus in print. That is one of the things which led us to post the text online. Simply put, we felt that some things should not be forgotten. In the interim, we’ve moved quite a few of these books for Dover Publications. If you’d like a good reading copy of the text, we highly recommended this edition. Ours are quite dog-eared now, after years of general abuse, and they’ve held up quite well.

by Christopher S. Mackay (Translator)
Cambridge University Press
(Paperback, May 29, 2009)

“Mackay has done a splendid job with the translation of this important work, and his commentary is a book in itself… provides useful information to both the general reader or undergraduate student and to graduate students or other scholars… sure to take its place among several recent and well-done translations of important demonological texts.”

Now available in a single volume, this key text is at last accessible to students and scholars of medieval history and literature. With detailed explanatory notes and a guide to further reading, this volume offers a unique insight into the fifteenth-century mind and its sense of sin, punishment and retribution.

by Christopher S. Mackay (Editor)
Cambridge University Press
(Hardcover, 2 Volumes, May 31, 2006)

“This fully annotated edition is based on the first edition of 1486-7 and presents the Latin text together with a full textual apparatus. An extensive introduction discusses the authorship, method of composition, and intellectual background of the work. The second volume provides the only accurate English translation available, together with detailed explanatory notes.”

While this set is rather expensive from the perspective of a graduate student, it represents the definitive edition of the Malleus Maleficarum, and allows for the personal comparative analysis of the Latin and English versions. An indispensable resource for anyone who is seriously studying the Malleus Maleficarum.

by P. G. Maxwell-Stuart (Editor)
Manchester University Press
(Paperback, July 24, 2007)

“The only previous translation of the Malleus into English, that by Montague Summers produced in 1928, is full of inaccuracies, is written in a style nowadays almost unreadable, and is unfortunately colored by his personal agenda. This edited translation, with an introductory essay setting witchcraft, Institoris, and the Malleus into clear, readable English, corrects Summers’ mistakes and offers a lean, unvarnished version of what Institoris actually wrote.”
